The three rules

  1. Midnight to noon: same hour, two digits, no AM. 12:00 AM becomes 0000, 9:05 AM becomes 0905.
  2. Noon to midnight: add 12 to the hour, drop PM. 1:00 PM is 1300, 11:59 PM is 2359.
  3. Minutes never change. Only the hour is converted.

Zulu time and time-zone letters

Orders that cross time zones use a letter suffix: Z (Zulu) is UTC, A to M are zones east of Greenwich and N to Y are zones west; J is skipped and means local time. 1800Z is 1:00 PM in New York during standard time and 2:00 PM during daylight saving time.

Frequently asked questions

What is military time?

Military time is the 24-hour clock written as four digits with no colon or AM/PM: 0000 is midnight, 1200 is noon and 1530 is 3:30 PM. The U.S. armed forces, hospitals, aviation and most of the world outside the U.S. use it to avoid AM/PM mistakes.

How do you convert standard time to military time?

For AM times keep the hour and add a leading zero below 10 (7:15 AM is 0715). For PM times add 12 to the hour (3:30 PM is 1530). 12:00 AM is 0000 and 12:00 PM is 1200.

How do you say military time out loud?

Read the hours as a number followed by "hundred" when the minutes are zero: 0800 is "zero eight hundred", 1900 is "nineteen hundred". With minutes, say both numbers: 0645 is "zero six forty-five". U.S. forces say "zero", not "oh".

Is 2400 or 0000 correct for midnight?

Both appear. 0000 starts a new day and is the usual U.S. military form; 2400 marks the end of the previous day, as in "the order expires at 2400". A clock never displays 2400.

What is the difference between military time and 24-hour time?

Only the writing. Civilian 24-hour time keeps the colon (15:30); military time drops it and may add "hours" (1530 hours). The Navy and Marines also add a time-zone letter, as in 1530Z for UTC (Zulu).
